The French Riviera or Côte d’Azur(Azure Coast) is one of the most romantic places on earth. The names itself conjures up images of a beautiful blue sea, warm sun, rugged landscape, beaches, lavender fields, and a laid back atmosphere. With more than 300 days of sunshine, the region has been attracting the crème de la crème of society since the 19th century.
Let’s take a look at the most popular towns in the French Riviera.
Cannes is probably the most popular town in the French Riviera. Its name is synonymous with the annual Cannes Film Festival which always draws a huge crowd. The picture-perfect postcard-like scenery has attracted thousands to its star-studded shores. Head to the promenade for a cup of coffee while watching yachts set sail against the beautiful sunset.
The vibrant city of Nice is the heart and soul of the French Riviera. With a stunning seafront promenade, the Promenade Des Anglais, and winding cobblestoned streets lined with flowers, Nice is what you picture when you think of the French Riviera. Explore the older parts of the town on foot to discover baroque style houses, cafes, galleries, and shops.
St. Tropez is a young, hip, and chic town which attracts thousands of travelers every year. All thanks to its numerous beaches and laidback lifestyle. Roll around the sandy beaches all day long or go on over to the Plage de Pampellone, a 3-mile promenade made up of beaches, cafes, luxury shops, and Michelin starred restaurants. This iconic town is the playground of the rich and famous. From British royals to the Hollywood stars have all vacationed in the golden beaches of St. Tropez
If you want to escape from the tourist crowds and explore the artistic and cultural history of the French Riviera, go to Antibes. The town is surrounded by a fortified wall with breathtaking views of the sea. Sandwiched between Nice and Cannes, Antibes was where the famous artist Pablo Picasso and writer F. Scott Fitzgerald stayed during their time in the French Riviera. This relatively unknown town is now gaining prominence as the new ‘It Place’ of the French Riviera.
Menton is known as the Lemon Capital of France. The warmest town in the French Riviera is known for its citrus orchards, especially the La Citronneraie orchard. The town also holds the popular lemon festival held every year in February. Explore the town on foot to discover the beautiful gardens, stunning 19th-century houses, and a striking bell tower with glazed tiles.
Though not necessarily a town since its a country, Monaco deserves a special mention. This tiny 2 square kilometer country packs a punch with its glitzy hotels, its opulence, and panoramic views of the sea. You can take your time to glance at superyachts from the harbor, visit the grand opera house, and even take a tour of the official residence of the royal family of Monaco, Palais du Prince.
